The Pura Panama Project, a project co-funded by GCL 2018 Gabriel Rebollón, MD and Daniel Sessa, launched in 2017 in the Republic of Panama to contribute to improving access and water quality in those communities where there is no drinking water. The project consists of delivering to each family a kit that contains a water filtration system, personalized training on the benefits of drinking water, its proper use and maintenance of the filters. During the training, the beneficiaries learn how to assemble the kit, how it works, how it is cleaned and what are the benefits that the water filter offers to them. These water filters can provide up to one million gallons of clean water and have an approximate duration of up to 10 years.
So far, more than 4,500 people who live in the communities belonging to the Emberá Region of Ipetí Emberá, Curtí Emberá, Piriatí in East Panama and recently the community of Majé Cordillera, on Lake Bayano, have directly benefited from this project. The Project offers a multidimensional solution that unites the latest technology with an educational program for families. This is achieved through a multi-sector alliance that monitors each community where the project is implemented and measures the impact in the medium and long term. Families who do not have access to quality drinking water have a higher risk of developing health problems, lack of hygiene results in problems such as parasites and bacteria that generate stomach pain, vomiting, and diarrhea.
This project is developed in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: SDG # 3: Health and Welfare, SDG # 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG # 10: Inequality Reduction, SDG # 17: Partnerships to achieve the objectives. The Multisectoral Alliance is formed by Global Shapers Panama City Hub, Alberto Motta Foundation, Infinity Real State Group, Copa Airlines, Waves For Water and Hotel Las Americas Golden Tower.
